Summers in Birmingham and New Orleans are long, hot and humid. That heat does more than make yard work miserable. Over time it wears down roofing materials, raises your cooling bills and can shorten the life of your roof, especially if the attic is not set up to handle it.

Here is what summer heat does to your roof, why the attic often makes it worse, and what you can do to protect your roof through the hottest months.

What Extreme Heat Does to Asphalt Shingles

On a sunny afternoon, a roof gets much hotter than the air around it, and dark roofs get hotter than light ones. Asphalt shingles are made to handle heat, but season after season of it slowly dries out the asphalt that holds them together. Over the years, that leads to:

Why Your Attic Is Making It Worse

A lot of heat damage actually comes from below. Without good ventilation, an attic can get much hotter than the outdoor air on a summer afternoon. That heat passes through the decking, which is the layer of wood boards the shingles are nailed to, and bakes the shingles from underneath while the sun hits them from above.

That is why two roofs with the same shingles and the same installer can wear out at very different rates. Asphalt roofs in our area typically last 15 to 20 years, and attic ventilation is one of the main things that decides whether a roof reaches the high end of that range or falls short. Learn more in our article on why attic ventilation makes a roof last longer.

Signs your attic ventilation is struggling in summer:

We check attic ventilation during every free roof inspection because it is so closely tied to how long your roof will last. If you need more airflow, our guide to types of roof vents explains the options.

Energy-Efficient Shingles: Are They Worth It in Alabama and Louisiana?

Cool roof shingles are made with special reflective granules that bounce back more sunlight instead of soaking it up. That keeps the roof surface cooler and sends less heat into the attic. In our climate, where the AC runs for much of the year, the difference can be real.

Dark asphalt shingles (black or charcoal)HottestBaseline
Light asphalt shingles (tan or gray)Somewhat coolerSmall improvement

Actual savings depend on your home, insulation, ventilation and AC system. A cooler shingle is not a good reason by itself to replace a roof that still has years left. But if you are already replacing your roof, ask about reflective shingle colors that are still covered by full manufacturer warranties. We are certified with both GAF and CertainTeed, and we can walk you through their options.

When It Is Too Hot to Work on a Roof Safely

This matters to homeowners because it affects scheduling. If you call us in July or August for a repair or replacement, it helps to know how heat changes the workday.

A roof in direct summer sun is far hotter than the air, which puts roofers at risk of heat illness. Heat also makes shingles softer and easier to scuff or tear during installation. In summer, our crews:

On days that are simply too hot to work safely, we would rather reschedule than rush. A job done carefully in the cooler hours turns out better than one pushed through in dangerous heat. Most residential roof replacements take 1 to 2 days, so a short delay rarely changes much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does heat void a roof warranty?

Not by itself, but poor attic ventilation can cause warranty problems. Shingle makers expect the attic to meet ventilation requirements, which building codes usually set at about 1 square foot of vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor. A roof that fails early because of poor ventilation may not be covered. We check ventilation on every roof we install.

Can a roof be too hot to walk on?

Yes. A dark roof in full summer sun can get hot enough to burn skin. Walking on hot shingles can also scuff off granules and damage the surface. That is one more reason to leave roof work to a professional crew, especially in summer.

Will a metal roof stay cooler than shingles?

Generally, yes. A light-colored metal roof reflects more sunlight than dark asphalt shingles, and metal cools off quickly after sunset. Standing seam metal roofs can also last 50 years or more. That makes metal roofing a strong choice for homeowners who care about long-term energy use.

Is summer a bad time to replace a roof?

No. We replace roofs all year. Summer takes more careful scheduling, but it is not a reason to put off a roof that needs to be replaced. Leaving a failing roof in place through hurricane season is riskier than replacing it in the heat.
